Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Elephants are amongst the some of the most magnificent creatures to walk the earth and are cherished and admired for their majestic beauty, superior intelligence and capacity for emotion.

On a land extent of 25 acres adjacent to the Maha Oya River, in the area of Pinnawala of the Sabaragamuwa province of Sri Lanka, is a captivating place that is established with the intention of providing care and protection for orphaned elephants.  The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage shelters a vast number of orphaned and abandoned elephants found in the forests of Sri Lanka and also nurses elephants who have been found wounded or injured.  Over the years, it has become a foster home for Sri Lanka’s largest herd of captive elephants.

In addition to the rare opportunity to watch these mammoth creatures up close and personal, visitors of Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage get to indulge in the beautiful, emotive sight of baby elephants being bottle-fed by volunteers or mahouts.

Another splendid display visitors are invited to view at the orphanage is the vast numbers of elephants bathing in the waters of the river.

Ensuring comfort and convenience, several restaurants have been situated in close proximity to the orphanage premises.  Those who visit here also have the opportunity of exploring the two spice gardens located nearby.
